Number of Awards & Eligibility: Varies, all qualified applicants will be considered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a Georgia resident for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to the first day of classes of the school term for which funds are sought.
  4. Must be fully admitted and classified as an undergraduate or graduate student by his/her eligible postsecondary institution.
  5. Must be enrolled in an eligible Georgia postsecondary institution.
  6. Must be a current member of the Georgia National Guard or the U.S. Military Reserves who completed at least one qualifying term of service. A qualifying term of service is defined, for purposes of this award, as having been deployed outside the United States for active duty service to a location designated as a combat zone and served in such combat zone for at least 181 cumulative days, beginning on or after Feb. 1, 2003, or served less than 181 cumulative days in a combat zone, beginning on or after Feb. 1, 2003, but was evacuated because of severe injuries.

Description: This award is available to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who are residents of Georgia residents and are attending an eligible postsecondary institution in Georgia. The student must be an active member of the Georgia National Guard or U.S. Military Reserves who were deployed to an active combat zone outside the United States.

Additional Information: The Georgia HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship is a state program, administered through the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC), established to provide educational scholarship assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones, and the children and the spouses of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves. Recipients must attend an institution that is a unit of the University System of Georgia, or the Technical College System of Georgia, or an eligible private/independent college or university in Georgia. A list of eligible institutions is available online at the GSFC website. Students must meet the general eligibility requirements for receipt of state aid in the state of Georgia and must: not owe repayment of a grant under any state or federal grant or scholarship program; not be in default on any federal Title IV or state student loan program unless satisfactory arrangements to repay have been made; maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress in accordance with the Federal Title IV standards and practices of the institution; and meet Federal Selective Service registration requirements.

Award Amount: Eligible recipients may receive up to $2,000 per academic school year. Award amounts are prorated for school terms in which recipients are enrolled for less than full time (12 hours). Recipients are eligible for the equivalent of four Award Years of HERO assistance, for a total of $8,000. A renewal application must be completed each academic year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.
