Number of Awards & Eligibility: Nine to ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is available for international and U.S. students.
  2. The student's biological parent must have served in the military on active duty.
  3. Must have a biological parent who is now deceased.
  4. Must attend an accredited college or university full-time.
  5. Must be under the age of 24. If the applicant served in a uniformed service before completing college, his/her maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years he/she served, for a maximum of five years.
  6. Student must be the child of a Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) member.
  7. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  8. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.
  9. The student's biological parent who is now deceased must have served in the military on active duty, and then retired.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. and international undergraduate students who have a biological parent who is a Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) member. The student's parent must now be deceased after serving in the military in active duty and retiring. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be under the age of 24.

Additional Information: The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is the nation's largest and most influential association of military officers. It is an independent, nonprofit, politically nonpartisan organization. A student cannot receive both a MOAA loan and a Ratay grant. Students applying for a loan who also meet the criteria of a Ratay grant automatically will be considered. No separate application is required. Qualified students are selected on the basis of their scholastic ability, activities, and financial need. *Please Note: Military academy cadets are not eligible for the General John Paul Ratay Educational Fund Grant. Semifinalists are notified in March. Recipients are notified in May.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, renewable for up to four years or until the student's first bachelor's degree is obtained.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $50,000.

Applications are available online on the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) website. To begin the online application process, each student must submit his/her email address and the last four digits of his/her social security number. Students applying for a loan who also meet the criteria for a Ratay grant will automatically be considered. No separate application is required. The application must be submitted online by noon EST on March 1.
