Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding and eligible applicants.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be currently enrolled or plan to enroll as an undergraduate or graduate student by June.
  4. Must be a veteran, active servicemember (pre- and/or post-9/11 military service), or the spouse of a veteran, active or deceased servicemember.
  5. Must enroll full time in a two- or four-year, public, private, vocational, trade degree or certification institution in the U.S. Only certification and degree programs of significant length and effort are eligible.

Description: The Pat Tillman Foundation unites and empowers remarkable military veterans. U.S. veteran or active military service members, or the spouses of veteran, active or deceased U.S. military servicemembers are eligible to apply for this award. Students must enroll in an undergraduate or graduate program and demonstrate financial need.

Application requirements for the Pat Tillman Military Scholars Program are:

Additional Information: A successful candidate will demonstrate financial need for basic educational and living expenses, not covered by other means; military service (or military service of a spouse); developed educational and career ambitions; a record of past personal achievement; his/her story through compelling, thoughtful, and genuine essay question responses; and a record of service to others in the community and a desire to continue such service. Each applicant will receive an email upon completion of the application, and will be notified of his/her status by June 30. If chosen as a semi-finalist, the applicant will need to submit the following additional materials: a financial aid award letter from his/her institution for the upcoming year; Student Aid Report (SAR), the summary from the FAFSA website; and a photo highlighting his/her or his/her spouse's military service (see examples on the foundation website).

Award Amount: Each award amount is determined on a case-by-case basis and is intended to meet each applicant's unique need. The exact amount will be based on the recipient's individual financial need and the strength of his/her application in the overall pool. The average award amount last year was $6,567 annually, with scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $23,000. Awards are renewable from one to three years, depending on the length of the recipient's program. Annual renewability will be considered based on proof of full-time student status, minimum grade point average earned, as well as, documented participation in civic action or community service. Funding will be sent to the recipient's institution by July 31.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $23,000.
