Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a citizen of the United States or Canada.
  3. Must be a qualified member of one of the following principal minority groups: American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, African-American, or Hispanic.
  4. Must plan to work in the library automation field.
  5. Must attend an institution accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). A list of ALA-accredited library schools can be found at www.ala.org/accreditedprograms/directory/search.
  6. Must pursue a Master of Library Science degree. Students may not have earned more than 12 semester hours towards a Master of Library Science degree by June 1 of the award year.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. and Canadian citizens who will have earned no more than 12 hours towards a Master of Library Science degree by June of the award year are eligible for this award. Students must be members of a principal minority group; attend an ALA-accredited school; and plan to enter the library automation field.

Additional Information: The three major factors considered when awarding this scholarships are academice excellence, leadership, and evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship. Economic need is considered when all other criteria are equal. Recipients will be contacted by phone after June 1. All other applicants will be notified by mail after July 1. The winner is announced and introduced, if present, at the LITA President's Program held during the Annual Conference of the American Library Association.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available online on the American Library Association (ALA) website. Scholarship information is available by clicking the 'Scholarships by Specialty or Practice Area' link, then clicking the 'Library Automation Technologies' link. Please note: The student need only complete one application to apply for all scholarships for which he/she is eligible. The following components are required for all ALA scholarships: a completed online application (includes a personal statement); contact information for three professional references, who will be sent instructions for completion of the online reference form; and official academic transcripts from the institution where the student received his/her bachelor's degree and the institution where he/she is currently enrolled. Transcripts may be sent to ALA directly from the institution or be submitted by the student in an unopened envelope. Only official, sealed transcripts will be accepted. Please note: Candidates should illustrate their qualifications for this scholarship with a statement indicating the nature of library experience and by the personal statement of the applicant's view of what he/she can bring to the profession, emphasizing experiences which indicate a potential for leadership and commitment to library automation. All application materials must be submitted online by the deadline.
