Epsilon Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually. One to a female student and one to a male student.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident with permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551 (not expired).
  3. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  4. Must be a minority.
  5. Must be attending a high school in the Bronx or Manhattan.
  6. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at a U.S. accredited college or university in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam for the upcoming academic year.
  7. Must have a cumulative weighted grade point average of 80 or higher (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale).

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. female, minority high school seniors who are currently attending a high school in the Bronx or Manhattan. Students must have a cumulative, weighted grade point average of 80 or higher (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale).

Additional Information: This award is in memory of Elizabeth Darguste, who passed away in 1995 from complications of sickle cell anemia disease. Elizabeth Chantal Darguste was born on December 4, 1968 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Elizabeth attended New York University where she received both a bachelor of science degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration. Ms. Darguste dedicated herself to improving access to housing for homeless children and served as a role model for underprivileged youth throughout the city. Ms. Darguste was heavily involved in social action issues, especially empowering children from disadvantaged communities. It is in this respect that the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hopes to help students with a bright future.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications are available from the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. website, from high school guidance counselors and via email using the address provided. Students may request an application by completing the form available on the Epsilon Tau website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: an essay of 300 to 500 words addressing the topic listed on the application; a sealed official high school transcript on school letterhead with original stamp or logo; SAT or ACT scores, if these are not already listed on the transcript; and one letter of recommendation from an academic teacher attesting to her scholastic ability and/or community involvement. The letter must be sealed with the referrer's signature across the seal. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date. *Please note: Official proof of registration (a bursars receipt or other school-specific documentation), verifying full-time enrollment, from the college that the recipient will be attending will be due Sept. 10.
