Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on funding. Last year, five scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have been a resident of Durham, Orange, or Wake counties in North Carolina for one year or more and be eligible to receive North Carolina resident tuition costs.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen for a minimum of one year at time of application.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award. Please note: Because of the nature of the scholarship, high school students seeking general scholarship assistance are discouraged from applying unless they have faced significant adversity.
  5. Must plan to attend a public state university or community college in North Carolina. Those attending or planning to attend private or independent colleges or universities are not eligible.

Description: This scholarship is available for undergraduate and graduate students who have been residents of Durham, Orange, or Wake counties in North Carolina for one year or more. Students must demonstrate the potential to succeed despite adversity and have an exceptional desire to improve themselves through further education or training.

Additional Information: An applicant must demonstrate the potential to succeed despite adversity and must have an exceptional desire to improve himself/herself through further education or training. There are no limitations regarding age, income level, previous education, course of study or training program. The scholarship may be used for technical or community college programs, vocational or trade programs, and/or four-year college or university studies. All applicants will be notified regarding status for the award by June 1. If an applicant has not been contacted by June 10, he/she should contact the Triangle Community Foundation. Award recipients are expected to attend an award ceremony. NOTE: Awards will be made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, age or national origin. GlaxoSmithKline and Triangle Community Foundation employees or their family members are not eligible.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years provided the recipient remains a student in good standing in the program he/she has chosen. Scholarship money may be applied to expenses for tuition, required fees, and required books or materials not covered by other financial aid. NOTE: The scholarship does not cover living expenses such as room and board, transportation, or child care.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.

Applications are available on the Triangle Community Foundation (TCF) website. In addition to a completed application, the student must also submit the following: answers to the narrative questions on the application (should use the space provided on the application and one side of an additional page if needed); official transcripts from each high school and institution of higher education he/she is currently attending or has attended in the past five years (must be sent directly to TCF by the school); and a recommendation from a person (not a family member) who knows him/her well (the recommendation form is included in the application). The recommendation is a critical part of the application, so the applicant should choose someone who can specifically address his/her adversity and his/her desire for further education or training. The application must be typed and must be completed in Adobe Acrobat format. The application, plus all supplemental materials, must be mailed to the address provided, and be postmarked by the deadline date.
