Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 54 nursing student scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. and international students.
  2. Must be enrolled at time of application in an accredited program as a nursing major for the upcoming school year. The student must possess an interest in the field of perioperative/surgical nursing, as demonstrated in his/her personal statements.
  3. Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate nursing program and have completed nine or more credit hours. Nursing students (applicants enrolled in a program leading to initial licensure as an RN), baccalaureate, master, and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply.
  4. Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a degree in nursing and are currently enrolled in a program leading to eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse.

Application requirements for the AORN Foundation Student Nurse Scholarship are:

Additional Information: A selection committee appointed by the AORN President-elect will evaluate the applications and select the winners by a blind review process. The use of this committee is designed to ensure the impartiality and confidentiality of the selection process. In evaluating the applicants, the committee will consider the applicants' academics/transcripts and personal statement.

Award Amount: Awards range from $500 to $2,500 annually, non-renewable. Checks will be mailed to each recipient's mailing address and will be made payable to the recipient. Recipients must submit grades and invoices for allowable expenses (tuition/fees/books) no later than Aug. 1. Funding period covers courses starting on or after July 1 and starting on or before June 1. The only exception for earlier payment will be for scholarship recipients graduating in December. Those scholarship recipients must submit grades and invoices for tuition, fees, and books by Feb. 1.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available on the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Foundation website. In addition to the completed online application, the student must submit the following: essays of 500 words or less addressing the topics listed on the application, a letter of acceptance (if applicable), and a transcript from his/her current program and/or a transcript from his/her most recently completed degree showing nine or more credit hours completed. Bachelors, masters and doctoral students must also submit a current resume or curriculum vitae.All supplemental documents (and the completed application, if the student is submitting a paper version) must be mailed to the address provided, received by midnight MDT by the deadline date. Only letters of acceptance may be received after the deadline. Faxed applications will not be accepted. No handwritten applications will be accepted.
