Number of Awards & Eligibility: 11 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a dependent of an employee of Hawai'i Independent Energy or its subsidiaries.
  3. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credit hours per semester).
  4. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  5. Must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate students who have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students must be dependents of an employee of Tesoro Hawai'i or its subsidiaries.

Additional Information: This fund memorializes E.E. Black, chairman and president of The Gas Company, now Hawaii Independent Energy. He is credited with revitalizing the company which was in danger of failing when he took charge. To recognize Mr. Black's numerous contributions, this fund was established in his honor. The scholarships go to dependents of employees at Hawaii Independent Energy. All applicants for this award must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $1,642 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $18,062.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation website. The student should visit the provider's website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed at the provider's website; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. For this scholarship, the student will be required to provide the name of the employee under whom he/she is applying and the employee's relationship to him/her. A student will not be able to submit his/her application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. HST on the deadline date.
