Number of Awards & Eligibility: 106 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  4. Must demonstrate a critical financial need. $55,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; a written explanation must be provided if income is higher.
  5. Must be enrolled full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter no later than the fall semester following graduation.
  6. Must be a resident of the United States.

Description: This award is for high school seniors with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher who demonstrate critical financial need. Each applicant who applies for a Horatio Alger scholarship program, whether it be a specific state program or the finalist program, will automatically be considered for the National Scholarship Program.

Application requirements for the Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program are:

  • Official Transcript
Additional Information: The National Scholarship Program distributes awards to eligible students in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Please note: National Scholars receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. during the spring of their senior year to participate in the National Scholars Conference.

Award Amount: The total value of this award is $25,000 paid out in equal installments annually. If the student receives this award he/she is guaranteed the funding for the full 5 years of his/her undergraduate program by maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $25,000.

Each applicant who applies for a Horatio Alger scholarship program, whether it be a specific state program or the finalist program, will automatically be considered for the National Scholarship Program. No additional applications or materials are necessary. Applications are available online from the Horatio Alger Association website. Each applicant must submit an online application. Paper applications are not accepted. The applicant must also provide a copy of the front page of his/her parent/guardian's most recent individual federal tax return (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ or 1099 SSA-Social Security Tax Form). If the student's parent/guardians were not required to file a tax return, the student should include statement copies of any government benefits, such as food stamps or Public Assistance documents. Online applications and supporting materials must be submitted by the deadline.
