Number of Awards & Eligibility: Varies annually based on the number of qualified applicants.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a Texas resident.
  3. Must rank in the top 10 percent of his/her high school class as of the seventh semester of high school (or sixth semester if his/her college uses that semester for admissions).
  4. Must graduate from an accredited high school in Texas.
  5. Must plan to enroll full time.
  6. Must plan to enroll in a Texas public two- or four-year college or university.
  7. Must be a graduating high school senior and enroll in an eligible college or university the fall 2016.

Description: This scholarship is available for Texas residents who are graduating from an accredited Texas high school and rank in the top 10 percent of their graduating class. Students must plan to enroll full time in a Texas public two- or four-year college or university, and demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: Texas's Top 10 Percent Scholarship was established by the state legislature to recognize and reward the top performing students within the state. In addition to all other requirements, the student must complete the Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school curriculum and demonstrate financial need (as determined by his/her college or university financial aid office). Financial need is calculated using the information provided from the student's FAFSA or TASFA. Students will be notified on their financial aid award notification received from the college to which they apply.

Award Amount: Up to $2,000 per academic year. Renewal awards are contingent on available funding, students must reapply each year to be considered. To renew the award, students must meet the following criteria: complete 30 semester hours in the previous year; maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher; and complete at least 75 percent of credit hours attempted. Qualifying students with a declared major in a critical workforce shortage field (teaching shortage area, nursing, allied health, science, technology, engineering, and math) may be eligible for a bonus of $2,000. The total award amount for students with declared majors in shortage fields may not exceed $4,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

To apply, interested students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The FAFSA should be submitted for state scholarship/grant consideration as soon as possible after October 1st but on or before January 15th to be receive priority consideration for the upcoming award year. In addition to a complete application, each participating college or university may require students to submit additional forms or supplemental information before scholarship eligibility can be determined. Students should contact his/her institution for additional details. All students who are eligible and attending a participating university will automatically be considered upon completion of enrollment and financial aid applications. Additional questions should be directed to the financial aid office of the school the student is attending.
