Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually, one per named scholarship.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a current high school senior who is anticipating completion of his/her high school diploma at the time of application and who plans to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. postsecondary institution.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher as of the end of junior year of high school.

Description: This scholarship program is open to high school seniors who have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and plan to attend an accredited U.S. postsecondary institution. Students must write an essay of 1,200 words or less on a selected topic related to baseball history.

Additional Information: The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) is a global team of almost 6,500 individuals and over 30 research committees. The Negro Leagues Committee (NLC) is the only one of SABR's committees dedicated exclusively to the history of black baseball. The Scholarship Committee of the Jerry Malloy Negro League Committee will review all the applications and make one selection per named scholarship. The scholarship winners will be notified in late April or early May.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the Negro Leagues Committee (NLC) website. Please note that the following named scholarships are offered through this program: the Jimmy Crutchfield Scholarship; the Andrew Rube Foster Scholarship; the Robert Peterson Scholarship; the Norman "Tweed" Webb Scholarship. Each scholarship has a separate application and essay topic. The student may apply for all scholarships for which he/she desires to write an essay. Only one essay will be accepted per applicant for any NLC scholarship. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator; a list, in order of importance, of high school activities he/she has been involved in and any offices held; a list, in order of importance of any community and/or church activities he/she has been involved in and any offices held; and an essay of 1,200 words or less addressing the baseball history-related topic listed on the application. Essays should be typed, double-spaced, and use 12-point Times New Roman font. All examples and references should be cited; endnotes should be used for citations. Failure to cite will result in disqualification. Applications should be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
