In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must be a member of the IEEE Computer Society.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.

Description: This is a writing competition for members of the IEEE Computer Society. The applicant must be an undergraduate student and have a 3.0 grade point average or higher.

Application requirements for the Lance Stafford Larson Student Scholarship are:

Additional Information: In 1983, the Lance Stafford Larson Award was established by the Larson family in memorial for their son, who died in an electrical accident while an undergraduate at the University of Maryland. The Larson family, which includes IEEE past President Robert Larson, created this award to encourage students to develop excellence in their communication skills and to motivate students toward achievement in the field of computer science. This award is presented for the best student paper. Only papers concerning computer-related subjects are eligible. Papers will be judged on technical content, writing skill, and overall presentation.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable. First-, second-, and third-place winners also receive a certificate of commendation and a writing implement.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.

Applications are available on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) Computer Society website by clicking on the 'Communities' tab from the website's homepage and then clicking on the 'Student Activities' tab. From there, the applicant should click on the link for 'Scholarships and Awards.' There is no application form for this award. The student must submit a paper concerning computer-related subjects. In addition to the paper, the student must submit the following information on a separate sheet of paper (typed): his/her full name; his/her IEEE member number; his/her current telephone number and email address (if available); his/her permanent mailing address; the name and address of his/her academic institution; the title of his/her paper; a brief statement of why he/she believes his/her paper is worthy of this award; and a signed and dated statement indicating that he/she is the sole author of the paper being submitted, and that all information provided is accurate and correct to the best of his/her knowledge. The entry must be sent to the IEEE Computer Society in the form of a PDF (portable document format) file.
