Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must reside in the Lehigh Valley region (Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties in eastern Pennsylvania and Warren county on the western edge of New Jersey).
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must be an undergraduate student at the time of application.
  4. Must be pursuing education to advance a career in welding after graduation.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  6. This award is for U.S. students.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. welding students who reside in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Lehigh Valley Section of AWS seeks to assist in the education and careers of young people with an interest in welding. This scholarship is provided to that end, and it is named in honor of Dr. Robert D. Stout, the Emeritus Professor of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Lehigh University. Professor Stout has long been a leading figure in the welding world. His distinguished career spends nearly 70 years and includes both faculty and administrative positions at Lehigh University, committee participation at AWS, many AWS awards, and even serving as AWS President in 1972.

Award Amount: $1,250 annually, non-renewable. Students who have been previously selected for a scholarship are eligible to reapply for a second year of funding.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,250.

Applications are available online on the American Welding Society (AWS) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit the following: three letters of reference with one letter of reference indicating previous hands-on welding experience; a personal statement; original official transcript(s) sent directly from the college or university (if applying for more than one scholarship, only one transcript must be an original official transcript); verification of enrollment; an essay as specified on the application; and a statement of unmet financial need. Students must also file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application and all supporting materials must be mailed to the address provided, and received by the deadline date.
