Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies based on the number of qualified applicants.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior or undergraduate student at the time of application.
  3. Must have a parent who is incarcerated or demonstrates a history of incarceration.
  4. Must have a competitive grade point average. A grade point average of 3.0 or higher is recommended, but not required.
  5. Must be a resident of Utah.
  6. Must plan to attend a vocational school, college, or university in Utah.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to undergraduate students from Utah who have one or more parents currently incarcerated or with a history of incarceration.

Additional Information: The Willie the Plumber Scholarship fund was established by Karl Winsness who spent years in prison and knows the impact this can have on young people and their dreams. He would be delighted to know that you are furthering your education, and he understands that it can be a challenge to do so when your parents are not there to help. To qualify for this award you must be a resident of the State of Utah, be graduating from or have graduated from a Utah High School with a GPA of 2.0 or above (though preference is given to students with a 3.0 or above), be admitted or attending a two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school, and demonstrate financial need. On-line and for-profit institutions and graduate studies are not eligible.

Award Amount: $500 annually for vocational and technical schools, and $1,000 annually for colleges and universities.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $750.

Applications for this award are available online from the Community Foundation of Utah website. In addition to the completed application, current high school students must upload a copy of a high school transcript including GPA and an acceptance letter from a two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school in the state of Utah. High school students who have not yet been accepted or selected an institution must indicate where he/she has applied and the anticipated acceptance date. Currently enrolled college students must include an up-to-date transcript, including GPA. All applicants must also include: one letter of recommendation; a copy of financial aid documents, such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA); and the required 300 word essay. If the student has not completed a FAFSA report, he or she must write about financial need in the essay. All applications and supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
