Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have been diagnosed with hemophila, von willebrand disease, or another chronic and inherited bleeding disorder.
  4. Must be a high school senior, college freshman, sophomore or junior at time of application.
  5. Applicants must have volunteered time and energy to directly benefit the bleeding disorders community.

Additional Information: An impartial panel of lay people, educators, and medical providers from the bleeding disorders community will review and judge applications. Criteria will include academic excellence, community service, recommendations, and personal statements. Awards will be announced in mid-May and will appear on the AHF website.

Award Amount: $3,000 to $6,000 annually, non-renewable. Scholarship funds will be awarded in two equal payments during the academic year. Payments will be made directly to the institution, one payment in August/September, and one payment in December/January. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate successful completion of the first semester or quarter(s) in order to receive the second payment. If a recipient fails to complete the first semester (or quarters) in good academic standing, the second payment of that year will not be made.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,500.

Applications will be available on the Colburn-Keenan Foundation website and are accepted beginning on Dec. 1. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a recent photograph; a current resume including volunteer actiivities and dates of volunteer involvement in the bleeding disorders community; an official transcript; an official ACT/SAT score report; two letters of recommendation from non-relatives; and the applicant's responses to the eight questions listed on the application. All of his/her responses should be no longer than 100 words for each question and should appear on another piece of paper in typewritten form, stapled in the upper left-hand corner with the applicant's name on each page. The applicant's letters of recommendation may arrive in hard copy or may be sent via email. The applicant must also include the names and phone numbers of his/her recommenders on the application. The applicant may also request that his/her recommenders send the letters directly to the federation. Applications must be completed online and supporting documentation must be postmarked by the deadline date and sent to the address provided. Recommendation letters and application materials must be received by the deadline date.
