Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a citizen or resident of the U.S. or Canada OR be enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the U.S. or Canada.
  3. Must be re-entering school after a five-year or longer absence.
  4. Must be a college sophomore, junior, or senior.
  5. Must be pursuing a career in a field that is related to floriculture or horticulture. Applicants for this award must have an interest in bedding and/or floral crops.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Applicants with lower grade point averages may be considered if they have otherwise outstanding qualifications or extenuating circumstances.

Description: U.S. and Canadian undergraduate students who are returning to school after a five-year or greater absence are eligible for this award. Students must be pursuing a career in a field related to floriculture or horticulture and be interested in bedding and/or floral crops.

Additional Information: Barbara Carlson, along with her husband Will, was instrumental in the establishment of Bedding Plant International (BPI) trade association, which served hundreds of growers. Fran Johnson enjoyed a long, productive career with the John Henry Co., a horticultural printing firm in Lansing, Mich. Fran also made many significant and practical contributions of time and talent through BPI to advance the greenhouse industry. Each student who has won a scholarship will be sent a notification letter by U.S. mail. Scholarship decisions will be made by August of each year.

Award Amount: $1,100 annually, non-renewable. All scholarships are provided as cash awards with checks issued jointly in the name of the recipient and the college or institution he/she will be attending in the fall.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,100.

Applications are available online on the American Floral Endowment (AFE) website. Students must submit the undergraduate application to apply for this award. Please note: The student may select up to six scholarship programs on the online application for which he/she wishes to apply. Applications with more than six scholarships selected will not be reviewed. Each application and support document must be written in English or include an English translation. A complete application consists of the following materials: a completed online application form, which includes a career goal statement; two letters of recommendation, preferably one from a teacher evaluating the applicant as a student and one from an employer evaluating him/her as a worker (recommendation forms included in the online application for printing); and transcripts from the applicant's most recent school (Microsoft Word, JPEG, and PDF files preferred). It is preferred that letters of recommendation and transcripts be submitted via email to the address provided. All application components must be submitted by the deadline date.
