Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must have graduated from an Idaho high school.
  4. Must have completed one or more years of college.
  5. Must wish to pursue a career in journalism or communications.
  6. Must be a full-time student.

Additional Information: Don Watkins was an amazing man. According to author Chris Carlson, Don nurtured, critiqued, and encouraged numerous reporters across Idaho mostly from his post as director of communications for the Department of Education and as press secretary to Idaho Governor John Evans. When he died at the age of 62 on August 24, 1981, the headline in The Spokesman-Review ran "Idaho Buries the Godfather". His family and friends created the Don Watkins Scholarships in his name.

Award Amount: Up to $1,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,500.

Application information is available on the Idaho Press Club (IPC) website. To apply, the student must submit the following documents: a one-page resume; a 500-word essay explaining his/her interest in a journalism or communications career; samples of his/her journalistic work, whether published or unpublished; and a copy of his/her transcripts, including grade point average, through the most recent fall term. If the student wishes to submit video files, he/she should upload them to YouTube and provide the link(s). Application materials should be emailed to the address provided by the deadline date.
