Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually. Please note: For a jointly-authored paper, the prize will be split.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student or the equivalent, or an undergraduate intern.
  4. Must be enrolled in a college or university program in music therapy.
  5. Must be a current student member of the American Music Therapy Association both in the year in which he/she applies and in the year in which the award is granted.
  6. Must attend an American Music Therapy Association-approved institution. A list of eligible institutions is available on the AMTA website by visiting the "Education & Careers" tab.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This research competition is open to undergraduate students studying music therapy at an institution approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). Students must be members in good standing of the AMTA both at the time of application and the time of award.

Application requirements for the E. Thayer Gaston Research Competition are:

  • Application form
  • Research paper
Additional Information: Judging will be done on the basis of originality, organization, clarity of writing, relevance of content to the music therapy profession, literature documentation and adherence to the APA style. In the event that the criteria is not met or the judges feel that no paper is worthy, the award will not be presented. Judging will be done by a clinician, an academician, and a non-music therapist in a related field.

Award Amount: $500 annually, non-renewable. The winning paper will also be reviewed for possible publication in the "Journal of Music Therapy".  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $500.
