Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of college students meeting the eligibility requirements in any given year. Last year, 36 awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of Faulkner County in Arkansas for 30 or more days preceding the application deadline.
  4. Must be a single parent with sole custody of one or more children under the age of 18.
  5. Must be the head of the household.
  6. Must be pursuing a career-oriented course of study as a full-time or part-time student in order to ensure a better standard of living. The student cannot have previously earned a bachelor's degree.
  7. Must be a low-income person living at or near the poverty level.
  8. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  9. Must be a high school graduate and/or GED recipient or older to apply for this undergraduate award.
  10. Must be single, legally separated, widowed, or divorced.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: High school graduates who are Faulkner County, AR residents living at or near the poverty level and are single parents with sole custody of one or more children under 18 are eligible for this award. Students must be the head of the household and be pursuing a career-oriented course of study in order to ensure a better standard of living with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: Students must be enrolled in or accepted by an accredited, public or private non-profit postsecondary school in a program providing marketable skills to achieve self-sufficiency. Applicants may be asked to participate in a 15-20 minute interview and provide additional references. To prevent the impression of a conflict of interest, Faulkner County Single Parent Scholarship Fund board members and their immediate relatives are ineligible to receive and will not knowingly be awarded a Single Parent Scholarship.

Award Amount: Full-time students will receive $750 per semester during the fall and spring semesters; part-time students may earn up to this amount. All students will receive $375 for the summer semester. The student may reapply each semester he/she is attending school, but he/she must fill out a renewal application for each semester an award is sought. Scholarships may be used for tuition, books, utility bills, car maintenance, childcare, or any other financial need that contributes to the recipient's success in school.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $563.

Applications are available on the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: two letters of recommendation from non-relatives who are familiar with his/her education goals and character; a statement of 300 words or less explaining why he/she chose a particular course of study and what he/she hopes to achieve; an official transcript of high school or college work and a copy of the most recent grade report received if recent grades are not included on the transcript; a copy of the first page of his/her most recent income tax return; proof of enrollment or acceptance to a college or university; and a copy of his/her Student Aid Report (SAR) or other proof that he/she has applied for the Pell Grant. The SAR is obtained by filing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted online by the deadline date. Application deadline dates are as follows: July 15 for the fall semester; Jan. 15 for the spring semester; and May 15 for the summer semester.
