Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, seven awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have been born in or have been a legal resident of the state of Maine for four or more years; or have a parent who was born in or has been a legal resident of the state of Maine for four or more years.
  3. Must be enrolled at a four-year degree-granting, non-profit institution of higher learning in the state of Maine, which must be listed as fully accredited in the latest edition of Accredited Institutions published by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be under 25 as of April 1.
  7. Must be enrolled as a full-time student.
  8. Must have completed a minimum of one year of undergraduate courses.

Description: This scholarship is available for Maine college juniors and seniors who are under the age of 25 and have completed one full year (28 semester hours) of undergraduate studies. Students must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

Application requirements for the Maine State Society of Washington, D.C. Foundation Scholarship are:

Additional Information: The scholarship committee shall be appointed by the foundation's board of directors and shall recommend the best candidate(s) based on merit. The name(s) of each awardee recommended by the scholarship committee will be submitted to the foundation's board of directors for approval. The foundation will notify each awardee in writing of his/her selection and that the scholarship funds will be sent to the institution's student financial aid officer. Names of awardees will be published in the Maine State Society newsletter. Awards will be made by the end of May. If after an award is made a student is put on academic probation or fails to attend the institution, the institution is required to return the scholarship funds to the Foundation.

Award Amount: The award amount can vary each year, but it will not be less than $1,000. Last year, all awards were $1,000. All awards are given on an annual basis and are non-renewable. The scholarship funds will be applied to the next semester (quarter) for tuition and fees. Students are allowed to reapply in subsequent years, but individuals are eligible to receive only one scholarship from this program.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on the Maine State Society of Washington, D.C. Foundation, Inc. website. Students may also fill in the form online and then print it. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a "student's copy" transcript (furnished by the registrar) of all college/university grades as of the date of the scholarship application; a typed, double-spaced composition of 500 words or less containing background information on his/her qualifications, including academic credentials, outside interests, and community service; a sample of his/her work (e.g., prose, poetry, articles, reports or art); and a certification from the registrar that he/she has completed one or more academic years and is enrolled full-time as a baccalaureate degree candidate according to the standards of the college/university. Applications must be emailed by the deadline date.
