Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to 30 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must be attending a Maine public college or university.
  4. Must meet one of the following conditions at the time of graduation from high school or upon completion of GED or equivalent: be in Maine's foster care program; be adopted from Maine's foster care program and adoptive parent(s) receive a subsidy from Maine DHHS; be a minor ward of a permanency guardian and guardian(s) receive a subsidy from Maine DHHS.
  5. Must be a high school graduate or have successfully completed a general education development (GED) examination or its equivalent, and must be pursuing an undergraduate degree.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to Maine undergraduate students who are attending a Maine public college/university. The student must have been in Maine's foster care program, or have been adopted from Maine's foster care system under subsidy from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.

Application requirements for the Maine Tuition Waiver Program (Foster Care) are:

  • Proof of acceptance/enrollment
Additional Information: The Tuition Waiver Program provides free tuition to certain foster children, adopted children/wards under subsidy from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Any Maine resident who has graduated from an approved secondary school or successfully completed a general education development (GED) examination or its equivalent may apply.

Award Amount: The award pays for the cost of tuition at eligible colleges and universities. Renewal applications are mailed to current recipients by the end of February.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,461.

Applications will be available from the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) website in February. To apply, students must complete the Tuition Waiver Program Application, and file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. In addition to the completed application, students must also provide proof of acceptance or enrollment in a degree program by submitting one of the following: a copy of the college admissions acceptance letter; or a letter from the college registrar's office confirming degree program status; or a current college transcript showing degree program status. There is no set deadline to apply for the Tuition Waiver Program. However, students are encouraged to apply as early as possible because funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Award notifications are made after May 1 annually. Applications received after that time will be considered if funding is still available.
