Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding and the number of qualified applicants. Last year, two awards were offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must pursue a degree in manufacturing engineering or a closely related field.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  3. Must be a full-time student.
  4. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  5. Must be a resident of Arizona, New Mexico, or southern California.
  6. Must be an SME student member, except high school seniors who may apply without any SME-member relationship.
  7. Must attend a college or university within the Desert Pacific Region (Arizona, New Mexico, or southern California).
  8. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.
  9. Must reside in and attend an accredited institution in the United States or Canada.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for U.S. and international undergraduate students who are majoring in manufacturing engineering at a college in Arizona, New Mexico, or southern California. The applicant must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be eligible.

Application requirements for the Walt Bartram Memorial Education Award (Region 12 & Chapter 119) are:

  • Official Transcript
  • Resume
Additional Information: The scholarship review committee and other ad hoc review committees will evaluate applications during March of the award year. Their recommendations for the top candidates will be presented to the SME Education Foundation Board at their annual meeting in May. Each applicant will be notified of the final decision by the end of June.

Award Amount: The minimum award amount is $1,000, but the student may receive a higher amount if more funding is available. This award is non-renewable. The scholarship can be used only as a credit toward tuition, fees or books.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available on the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation website. The applicant must first visit the website and complete the online entry form. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit a student statement of 300 words or less addressing the topics listed online; a student resume; official transcripts; and two letters of recommendation. The applicant is strongly encouraged to visit the SME website for specific details and instructions about each of these application components. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by the deadline.
